Humanitarian Policy Officer - East Africa Crisis (1298)

Tearfund has recently scaled up our response to the Food Security crisis in East Africa (South Sudan, Ethiopia, Somaliland, Kenya). This has created a new opportunity for an experienced Policy Officer to join our team to support our humanitarian response in the region and scope and roll out a detailed work plan that delivers our key strategic objectives for Advocacy outcomes for the Crisis.

The successful applicant will take the lead on ensuring policy consistency on issues relating to the East Africa crisis in line with broader East and Southern Africa Team Advocacy messaging and strategy.

The role will split their time between two primary objectives:

  1. Responsibility to scope policy topics and advocacy approaches related to the drivers of cyclical slow onset food security crises in the region (as relevant in each context) with a primary emphasis on Environment / Climate change. It is expected that the scoping will inform a detailed  plan for action research on two to three priority topics to inform recommendations for policy/ implement advocacy on food security (and related) issues, which will then be lead by the Policy Officer (involving up to 16 weeks of travel in the region). In addition to this the role will link in with Tearfund's broader work on environmental sustainability through engagement in relevant campaigns and drawing together the field level messaging and policy needs with the broader global climate change campaigns.
  2. Support UK and international advocacy on South Sudan, engaging in relevant networks, updating position papers and working in close liaison with the South Sudan country team and regional Policy officer to support advocacy outcomes on the crisis in South Sudan

The role will also build and maintain relationships with relevant networks (NGOs, government and private sector) in the UK relating to EAC policy issues in each of the the focus countries and represent Tearfund in relevant policy or advocacy forums and meetings.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and interested individual who has at least three years of experience working in advocacy in the Humanitarian sector with a focus on  environment and climate change and South Sudan (or a similar context). Please note this is a role that requires independent thought and the experience, knowledge and confidence to engage with government stakeholders.

The successful candidate will be able to effectively influence and negotiate and work well in a diverse team. They will have significant action research experience and be comfortable formulating policy and advocacy recommendations.  The role will facilitate good practice in the area of advocacy to ensure Tearfund’s work builds the resilience of the most marginalised and vulnerable in line with Tearfund’s own Quality Standards .

Applicants require fluent English language skills (written and spoken).

All applicants must be committed to Tearfund's Christian beliefs.

Location: The position will be based in Teddington, UK with up to 16 weeks of travel in the region.

Contract Length: The initial contract is for 1 year, with a possibility to extend depending on the scoping and workplan that are developed as part of the first year.
